Spelling

Spelling and phonics are a huge focus in Year 1 and 2.

KS1 children will receive weekly spellings to practise at home. It is important that children practise these to support them in becoming confident and able writers.

Below are the common exception words for year 1 and 2 that the child must be able to spell by the end of the year.

'Tricky words' are words that cannot be easily decoded (sounded out and read). This is because some of the sounds in the word are spelled in an unusual way. It is important for children to be able to read these words as they are some of the most common words in English.

The table below shows the Phase 2 tricky words and explains why each word is tricky. Children will practise reading and writing these words in their Phonics lessons and across the curriculum. They will also practise reading these words in the decodable books they bring home.
