Phonics
Phonics
Phonics is a way to teach children how to read and write. Your child will participate in a 30 minute Phonics session every day to learn the skills of early reading and writing. We learn 4 sounds every week. At ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ we use Little Wandle Letters and Sounds. You can find materials to help you support your child on the website:
Please click on the 'Related Downloads' section on the right for some useful sound sheets ----->
"Sound talking" and "Sweep": This strategy teaches your child to read individual graphemes and sweep the sounds together. For example, "b-oa-t boat"
"Segment": This strategy teaches your child to say the sounds they can hear in words. For example, when writing 'boat' your child will say "b" as the first sound.
Spring
In the spring term we will begin introducing children to new phonemes and graphemes that will help them to read and write a wider range of simple words and captions. The children will continue to learn their tricky words - these get added to each week and we test the children weekly so it is very important that they practise these every day. Once children complete a set of tricky words they will receive a certificate and a prize.
Below are the sounds that your child will be learning, please take time to go through these with your child and practice them at home. On the website, there are videos showing how each of the different sounds are pronounced. It is important that children are practicing pure sounds to support their reading. for the parents section of the Little Wandle website.
