We follow the NCETM Mastering Number approach in Reception. This helps us to build secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children, developing children's fluency and flexibility with number. Attention will be given to key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through KS1 to support success in the future.
As well as this, we also teach the children about Shape, Space and Measure, building up their understanding of concepts such as pattern, properties of shapes, and measurement.
Autumn 1
This half term the children will do lots of subitising - this is when we look at an amount of objects in a set and see how many there are without counting them. We will also be learning how to subitise sets of sounds that we hear, like hearing how many claps the teacher does. We will be focusing on our counting skills, remembering to count 1 at a time and in order. We will be looking at the different ways we can make 3 and 4, and will be comparing sets of objects using 'more' and 'fewer'.
In Shape, Space, and Measure lessons, the children will be learning how to read, carry on, and create their own AB patterns e.g. 'red, yellow, red, yellow...'. They will also explore sorting the basic 2D shapes; circles, triangles, squares and rectangles.
