We follow the NCETM Mastering Number approach in Reception. This helps us to build secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children, developing children's fluency and flexibility with number. Attention will be given to key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through KS1 to support success in the future.

As well as this, we also teach the children about Shape, Space and Measure, building up their understanding of concepts such as pattern, properties of shapes, and measurement.

Spring 2

In maths this term, we will be continuing to develop our understanding of the ‘staircase pattern’, ordering numbers to 10. We will also look at doubling and at how some numbers can be made of 2 equal parts. We will learn about odd and even numbers too.

In Shape, Space and Measure, we will learn about 3D shapes; how to recognise them in real-life objects and how to describe their properties. We will learn the days of the week in order and will continue our learning about weight. At the end of the half term we will learn about position and direction, and will use this learning in our egg hunt!
