Working together to improve school attendance

We are committed to meeting our obligations with regards to school attendance, including those laid out in the Department for Education’s (DfE’s) statutory guidance on working together to improve school attendance, through our whole-school culture and ethos that values good attendance, including:

  • Setting high expectations for the attendance and punctuality of all pupils
  • Promoting good attendance and the benefits of good attendance
  • Reducing absence, including persistent and severe absence
  • Ensuring every pupil has access to the full-time education to which they are entitled
  • Acting early to address patterns of absence
  • Building strong relationships with families to make sure pupils have the support in place to attend school
  • Maintaining accurate attendance records and understanding attendance data to identify children who may require additional support.

How parents and carers can support their child

  • Contact school promptly if your child is absent.
  • Encourage good routines for bedtime and morning preparation.
  • Make medical and dental appointments outside of school hours where possible.
  • Take an active interest in your child’s school life—ask about their day and celebrate achievements.
  • If you suspect that your child may be missing school or is unhappy at school, you should contact the school as soon as possible so that you can work with them to resolve any difficulties.
  • Make sure your child understands that you do not approve of them missing school, but be on the alert for any particular reasons for non-attendance, such as problems with school work and discuss these with the school.
  • If your child is ill or absent for any other reason, contact the school on every day of absence by 8.15 am.
  • If your child is attending a medical appointment during the school day, you can notify the school by emailing or writing a note in your child’s planner.
  • Make sure that your child arrives at school on time.
  • Take an interest in your child’s education.
  • Ask them about their day and praise and encourage their achievements at school.

Working with families

We understand that family circumstances can sometimes make attendance challenging. Our priority is to work in partnership with parents and carers to support children in attending school every day.

ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ will:

  • Keep parents/carers informed of their child’s attendance.
  • Contact families promptly when absences are unexplained or unauthorised.
  • Provide support to overcome barriers to regular attendance.
  • Celebrate and reward good attendance and punctuality.
